NCDI meets with Chinese scholars interested in social justice nonprofits

In August NCDI was honored and pleased to sit down with two visiting professors from academic institutions in Shanghai (Fudan University and East China Normal University). These guests were part of the U.S. State Department's International Visitors Leadership Program, a professional exchange program that seeks to build mutual understanding between the U.S. and other nations through carefully designed short-term visits to the U.S. for current and emerging foreign leaders.

The Chinese delegates wanted to learn about NCDI's work in diverse communities and about the nuts and bolts of nonprofit management, especially financial monitoring systems. As China's fledgling nonprofit sector develops, they would like to apply the lessons learned from their trip to advance the growth of responsible and effective nongovernmental organizations in their home country.

Cinco de Mayo and What History Teaches Us

May 5th or Cinco de Mayo in Spanish is an indellible date that holds a valuable lesson for all communities.  Cinco de Mayo is important in Mexican history because it marks a significant victory by a Mexican army that defeated a larger, better-equipped French army.  Many celebrate this day without much knowledge about why they are celebrating except that it is a good opportunity to drink and be merry.  What we should note in this memorable part of Mexican history is that David can beat Goliath.  In other words, even when things seem insurmountable, victory is possible.

Often times the communities we work in are like the Mexican army or like David - fighting against a school district, corporate entity, or local government that is larger in size and better equipped.  We have to be like the Mexican army and like David and believe, and give people hope and belief in themselves that they can overcome what may seem like unbeatable odds.

As you reflect upon Cinco de Mayo, remember your role as part of a larger effort to make communities of color a more equitable, healthier place to live.  Victory is possible!

Take care,

Detroit's Wayne County Commissioner honors NCDI Staff member

Please join NCDI in congratulating our staff member, Kenyetta Peoples.  The Wayne County Commission honors special women during National Women's History Month.  Within her district, Commissioner Alisha Bell chose to honor Kenyetta during a special ceremony on March 18th for her outstanding work within the community.

Kenyetta serves as a Community Liaison with NCDI.  She overseas the Skillman Foundation Good Neighborhood Initiative (www.skillman.org) in the Cody Rouge community, a neighborhood in which she was born and raised.  Kenyetta brings determination, discipline, and dedication to motivate and inspire young people.  Her mission is to bridge the gap of youth locally, nationally, and internationally through collaboration and building utopia partnerships.
