Race and Economic Development Survey, East Bay Community Foundation and San Francisco Foundation

The East Bay Community Foundation and The San Francisco Foundation invite and encourage you to participate in a unique survey designed to help examine race relations in American cities and the role of economic development strategies in impacting race relations. The goal of this project is to better understand the correlation between race relations and economic development strategies. The project also seeks to understand how public, private, and philanthropic efforts might foster greater racial harmony and economic development improvements in communities through a better understanding of the intersection of race and economic development. Oakland is one of a number of cities selected to participate in this project. The survey will be followed by a focus group in the city and a report on the findings will be released in the fall of 2006.

The web link for the survey is www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=110301678324.

The East Bay Community Foundation is assisting The San Francisco Foundation in disseminating the survey and with hosting the focus group meeting in Oakland. The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete and does not require you to identify yourself. You should freely share the web link with others and questions can be answered by contacting James W. Head (jwh(at)sff.org) or Tanya Clark (tlc(at)sff.org) at The San Francisco Foundation.

Save New Orleans East

New Orleans East is home to the largest Vietnamese community in New Orleans. Ignored in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Vietnamese community still managed to hang on. They are now one of the first communities to return and resettle in the city.

But the resettlement of this community is now threatened by the city's plans to create a landfill only one mile away. This landfill will hold the debris from the Katrina cleanup. But as everyone saw on television, this debris contains toxic construction materials such as asbestos, uncontained electronic components, and contaminants. This landfill is not suitable for holding toxic contaminants.

For more information, please visit www.saveneworleanseast.org, or you can also listen to a new story that NPR ran in May on the landfill. Please click on this link, www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5400944.
